Forgetting About Our Own Hair When Wearing a Protective Style

Guilty as charged! How many times have we worn a protective hairstyle and gone days or even weeks without moisturizing or cleansing our hair? Use a good moisturizer to keep your hair hydrated when rocking a protective style and pay attention to your hair and scalp, sensitivity, itchiness or flakes is a sign that your hair needs a little TLC.

Brushing or Combing Wet Hair

How many times have we heard people advocate detangling in the shower? While it's not a terrible idea, using the wrong tool can cause severe breakage. Before you get in the shower use a big-toothed comb to work through your hair in sections, and once your hair is wet use only your fingers to detangle, taking your time to work through any knots.

Forgetting Heat Protector

Too much heat can cause your hair cuticles to crack which means breakage. A lot of people think heat protector when they think flat iron, but heat protector should also be used before blow-drying hair.

Towel Drying Hair

Chances are you reach for a towel when you finish washing your hair but did you know that using cotton, such as a t-shirt is actually much better for your hair? Hair is much weaker when wet and towels can be quite rough so wringing out your hair with a towel can cause damage to your hair shaft and result in split ends.

Wearing Our Hair Too Tight

Two words: traction alopecia! If your ponytail is pulling on your edges, your head is pulsing after having your braids done or you’ve got a headache while wearing a wig, then your hair is too tight. It’s not worth the hair loss ladies.
