4 TIPS FOR FABULOUS BRAIDS
Posted on 12 October 2018
Crochet braids, box braids, jumbo braids, cornrows and more. Who doesn't love braids? With so much versatility there's something for everyone.
Braids are so low maintenance that when you're wearing them it can be easy to forget to take care of your real hair underneath. So today we're sharing our top tips for maintaining healthy hair underneath your braids.
Tip 1: Choose the right braids
A key step to making sure your braids look fabulous for as long as possible is by installing the right ones for you. If you're tender-headed opt for braids that are low tension, for example using the rubber band method to install jumbo braids or installing lightweight crochet faux locs. There's nothing worse than having to remove braids after just two days before your scalp hurts. Also, if you're planning on a beach vacay (or if you just live in a very raining place) check out Sensationnel's water-resistant Ruwa braiding hair.
Tip 2: Keep your scalp happy
If you have an oily scalp or get a lot of product buildup then you'll need to wash your hair more often than someone who doesn't, otherwise, your scalp will get itchy. Opt for a root refresher or dry shampoo made specifically for braids like Cantu's Apple Cider Vinegar Root Rinse. If you do wash your hair fully just don't use conditioner as it can loosen up your braids. Also, make sure your hair is fully dry to prevent the build-up of mold and mildew.
Tip 3: Moisturize
Keeping your hair and scalp moisturized is so important. It will help to keep your hair healthy and protected and will reduce itching! Take a look at this video to see how Naomi Rose keeps her hair moisturized when she wears braids:
Tip 4: Wrap your hair at night
Keep your braids looking as fresh as they can by wrapping your hair at night. If you have a lot of extensions installed and wrapping your hair is too difficult then invest in a silk pillow. You won't regret it!
