FAIRY KNOTS: WHAT THEY ARE AND HOW TO AVOID THEM
Fairy knots might sound like something whimsical and fun but if you have curly hair then you'll know just how annoying they can be. Fairy knots, also known as single strand knots, are caused when a single strand of hair knots on itself. They are called fairy knots because they're so small they're said to have been knotted by a fairy. To get rid of them you typically need to cut them out, though more patient people might be willing to try and tease them out.
So how do you avoid fairy knots? Here are our top tips.
1. Wear stretched and protective styles
The curlier and coilier your hair is the more likely that fair knots will form because the hairs are constantly rubbing against one another. Stretching your hair or wearing a protective style will reduce the movement in your hair and in turn the amount of fairy knots.
2. Sleep with a satin scarf/pillow or bonnet
Cotton pillows might feel super soft to the touch but they can cause your hair to snag and rub much more. Putting your hair away at night and sleeping with satin is much better for your hair.
3. Take time to detangle your hair
The more detangled your hair is, the less chance it will knot. Simple!
4. Get regular trims
The ends of your hair are the oldest and often the dryest parts of your hair making them more likely to rub against one another and get caught on things like your clothes, scarves etc.
5. Deep condition your hair
Deep conditioning will help to keep your hair moisturized and supple meaning there will be less chance that it will tangle or that the friction will cause the hair to curl on itself. Be sure you also apply leave-in conditioner and oil throughout the week.
