Wash days can be a struggle, to say the least. From mentally preparing yourself to actually wash your hair to sectioning, detangling, conditioning (and you know you gotta wear that plastic cap for it to really seep in) and styling. It can takes hours. So in today's post, we're answering the question "How often should I wash my hair?".

There isn't one answer to this question as there are lots of factors to consider however one thing is for certain and that's that washing your hair too often can dry it out. Overwashing your hair can strip it of its natural oils and over-styling can cause breakage.

So, what do you need to consider?

Your Lifestyle

It stands to reason that if you're more active that you'll need to wash your hair more often because of the build-up of sweat but there are other things such as the weather and your stress levels that can also influence how often you wash your hair. The weather, stress and your hormone levels can increase or decrease your sebum production (the thing that makes hair feel greasy), and while you might have been able to wash your hair weekly a month ago, you might find that you now need to wash it more often. Also, if you apply a lot of products to your hair you'll need to wash your hair more often.

Pre-existing Hair and Scalp Conditions

If your hair is bleached and brittle washing it more frequently isn't a good idea because as we've mentioned before you'll strip it of its natural oils. If you have dandruff, wash your hair more frequently to get rid of the build-up. To prevent drying your hair out use co-washing (washing your hair with conditioner only).

Your Curl Pattern

Kinkier textures are more prone to breakage than looser curl patterns, so if you have a tighter curl pattern you can go a week or two between washes. Wash, detangle and condition your hair in sections of 4 to 6 to keep wash day manageable and to prevent breakage.

Your Hairstyle

If you're wearing a weave or crochet braids or another hairstyle that can last 6 weeks+ then use a dry shampoo in between washes to refresh your scalp and prevent product build-up.

So in conclusion, there really is no set answer for how often you should wash your hair but a general rule of thumb is weekly unless your scalp feels itchy or like it needs to be refreshed.
