Dandruff is a condition that causes the scalp to flake. While it isn't contagious it can be embarassing and cause itching.

Dandruff can easily be confused with dry scalp. Dry scalp can be caused by a lack of moisture, a change in weather (typically cooler temperatures), age, or your general skin type; the flakes are typically smaller and you may notice dry skin on other areas of your body. Dandruff on the other hand is caused by a build up of scalp oil and skin cells; flakes are larger and may have a yellowish twinge to them. Dandruff can also be caused by a buildup of fungi on the scalp. If you're unsure what your flakes are then visit your local dermatologist who will be able to help.

An easy way to get rid of dandruff is to use medicated shampoos. The ingredients you should look for are ketoconazole (kills the fungi that causes dandruff); pyrithione zinc (anti-bacterial and anti-fungal); tar (slows down the growth rate of skin cells); salicylic acid (eliminates scaly buildups); or selenium sulfide (anti-fungal). If you find that a shampoo with one of these ingredients works for a while and then stops working try another one instead.

You can also use natural remedies to get rid of dandruff. Some of our favorite natural remedies include tee tree oil (kills fungi, is anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory); coconut oil (improves hydration, soothes skin and has anti-microbial properties); apple cider vinger (balances pH levels and has anti-bacterial properties); baking soda (anti-fungal); and aloe vera (anti-bacterial and anti-fungal). Keeping your scalp clean and managing stress can also help to prevent dandruff.
