6 BLACK HAIR MYTHS
Posted on 13 September 2017
Today, we're talking about black hair myths. There are so many misconceptions floating around in the black hair community and we're here to reveal the truth about some of the most common myths...
1. Black hair doesn't grow
Aren't you tired of hearing this one? Black hair is beautiful and when it's cared for it can grow long and healthy! People like to think it doesn't grow because shrinkage can make hair appear shorter than it actually is. Stretch your hair to truly see how long it's getting!
2. Black hair is strong
Not true! Because of the curls and coils black hair is actually very weak and prone to breakage. That's why protective hairstyles are so good because they prevent excess stress on your hair.
3. Black hair grows slowly
If you've ever had relaxed hair and had to have touch-ups every 6-8 weeks then you'll know that this is definitely not true. Again people think black hair grows slowly because it shrinks however it grows at the same rate as every other hair type which is about half an inch per month.
4. Black hair grows faster when you trim it
This one is not exactly true. Trimming hair doesn't automatically make hair grow longer instead it gets rid of split ends and fairy knots. When split ends are left they can travel all the way up the shaft making hair weak and break. Fairy knots are created when a single strand of hair knots up on itself. They are very annoying and almost impossible to get rid of without cutting them out.
5. Petroleum and mineral oil are good for black hair
These two ingredients are in so many black hair products but that doesn't mean they are actually good for black hair. While they make your hair look shiny and healthy they can clog your hair follicles and make it difficult for your hair to grow. We recommend that you use coconut oil instead.
6. Black hair is unmanageable
A big tooth comb and conditioner are essentials for detangling black hair but a lot of people don't know this and would rather say that black hair is unmanageable. As long as you know what you're doing (or have a stylist or a friend who likes to do hair) black hair is perfect for so many beautiful hairstyles including braids, bantu knots, twists and so much more!
